This paper discusses most of the research and the main theories regarding the development of homosexuality in males. It should not be considered to be “fact” since few, if any, of these theories have been proven and most of the research findings have not been validated.
Even so, it is a valuable reflection of current thought and best guesses on the subject. Although written in 1996, the paper remains current as research on the topic slowed substantially in the late nineties. The years since this paper was written have seen little new research or theory.
My hope in presenting this paper is to provide information and insight that you are not likely to discover otherwise. Whether you are trying to understand your own life history, the life story of a loved one, or are just curious about the topic, I hope you find this paper useful.
David Matheson, LPC
